Watch Out for the "Call Forwarding" E-Mail Phishing Scam

The information security company SecureWorks reports a new e-mail phishing scam that uses a "Call Forwarding" technique. The phisher obtains your personal information and tricks you into forwarding your phone calls to another number. A courtesy call from your financial institution to verify suspicious activity would be intercepted by the thief.

The e-mail explains that your financial institution needs to verify your phone number and states that if the number is not confirmed your account will be suspended. You are asked to dial *72 followed by a series of numbers. This initiates the feature to forward all your incoming calls. You will then be prompted to confirm your phone number and to verify/update personal information such as social security and account numbers. With this information, the phisher can make fraudulent transactions. If your financial institution calls you about suspicious activity, the phisher receives the phone call and confirms that the transactions are legitimate.

Protect yourself against phishing scams. Never provide your financial or personal information to an unknown or suspicious source. Remember, Provident will never ask you for personal account information by e-mail or telephone unless you initiate the contact.
