Provident Overdraft Services

Running a little low on funds in your Provident checking account? Don't despair; we've got you covered. Overdraft Protection and Courtesy Pay will both avoid insufficient checking balances and prevent your checks from being returned due to non-sufficient funds (NSF). While we don't encourage overdrafts, we want to save you from the additional merchant fees and possible damage to your credit history. In fact, even ATM withdrawals, automatic payments, and PIN-based Check Card purchases are now covered by both traditional Overdraft Protection and Courtesy Pay.

"Traditional" Overdraft Protection

One of the best reasons to keep all of your accounts at Provident: if your checking account drops below zero, your transactions will still go through without NSF (Non-Sufficient Funds) fees, as long as you have another Provident account that the funds can be drawn from, such as a Visa or line of credit, another checking account, a savings account, or a money market account.

Please note that when the overdraft source is a Provident Visa credit card, overdraft protection is not available for ATM withdrawals, Bill Manager payments, automatic loan payments, nor for signature or PIN based debit card transactions. For most checking accounts at Provident, there is no fee associated with this service (aside from normal finance charges if the funds come from your Visa or line of credit).

Courtesy Pay

Overdraft Protection is great for as far as it goes, but what if you don't have enough available funds in your other Provident accounts? Well, as long as you maintain your account in good standing, Provident Credit Union may still approve your overdrafts within your current available Courtesy Pay limit.* Please see our overdraft policy for the definition of an account in good standing.

The following transactions are covered requiring no action on your part:

  • Written checks
  • ACH (electronic payments)
  • Recurring debit card transactions

At your request, your Courtesy Pay limit may also be available for these transactions:

  • ATM
  • One time debit card transactions

Courtesy Pay costs you nothing unless you use it. If used, you will be charged our paid item overdraft fee for each overdrawn item.

Still have questions? We have answers!

* Limits apply based on type of checking accounts. Whether your overdraft will be paid is discretionary and we reserve the right not to pay. For example, we typically do not pay overdrafts if your account is not in good standing. There is a fee associated with each item covered by Courtesy Pay.

No Need to Apply!

Overdraft Protection and Courtesy Pay are automatically applied to all eligible Provident checking accounts, unless you opt out. If for some reason you don't have it set up on your account, give us a call at (650) 508-0300 or (800) 632-4600, and we'll set it up for you.
